The Evermore Centre Presents “Becoming Trauma Informed” with Erin Beckwell

Mar 4, 2021

The Evermore Centre is proud to bring in Erin Beckwell to talk about trauma and violence informed relationships and the impact trauma can have on children.

Erin is a local social worker and consultant who has spent her career working in the areas of health, education, and community development. The Evermore Centre’s Family Development Coordinator Mackenzie had the opportunity to have Erin as a professor during her BSW education. Mackenzie commented that “Erin had a big impact on her education, she learned a great deal from her, especially on the topic of trauma.”

Trauma is such an important topic to talk about when it comes to children and adoption.

Many children have experienced trauma. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States concluded that nearly two thirds of all people have experienced at least one adverse experience before the age of 18, and over 15% have experienced 4 or more adverse childhood experiences. Children and youth never asked to be put into those types of situations, but trauma and adverse experiences can have a lasting impact.

Here is what Erin has to say about the upcoming webinar:

“When we don't understand and consider the impact of trauma, this can get in the way of our ability to provide safe, caring and supportive environments for the children and youth in our care - and for ourselves as parents and caregivers. Given the enormous influence that trauma has on how we handle stress, understand ourselves, and approach relationships, it is important that parents and caregivers have a basic understanding of trauma, can recognize the symptoms of trauma, and appreciate the role they play in supporting recovery. This session will explore how we define trauma, how historical and ongoing trauma impacts how we function and interact with others, and ways we can prioritize safety, choice, and control in our relationships and environments”
